Did I Just Contract HIV? Symptoms of Primary HIV Infection

It’s sometimes possible to recognize when you’ve recently contracted HIV from signs and symptoms such as fever, rash, or swollen lymph nodes. This video will teach you how to recognize signs and symptoms of primary HIV infection that are experienced by between 40 and 90% of individuals after they are first infected with HIV. Primary HIV infection occurs during the first few weeks or months after a person first becomes infected with HIV. Symptoms include rash and/or fevers, possibly in combination with one or more of the following symptoms: malaise (which is a general feeling of weakness, discomfort, and fatigue), loss of appetite, weight loss, a sore throat, sores in the mouth, joint or muscle pain, swollen lymph nodes, diarrhea, fatigue, night sweats, nausea and vomiting, headache, or genital sores. The symptoms usually last from seven to ten days, and rarely more than two weeks. There is an incubation period of a few days to a few weeks between when the person was exposed to HIV and when the symptoms begin. If you have any of these symptoms and think there’s even the slightest chance you might have been exposed to HIV, such as through recent sexual activity or sharing a needle, even with someone who you believe is HIV negative, you should see a doctor and ask to be tested for HIV. When you go to the doctor with any of these symptoms, it’s very important to mention any risk factors you may have for HIV so they could test you. If you have ever had unprotected sex, even once, have used injection drugs, or think you might be experiencing primary HIV infection, make sure to tell your doctor. This is Eric; I’m not a doctor. HIV is a virus; you have to contract it from another person or their bodily fluids. HIV also “dies” within a few minutes of being outside the body on a dry surface. Therefore, there’s no risk of contracting HIV in the scenario you describe. But the U.S. CDC says all people age 13-64 should be tested for HIV whether they think they are at risk of HIV or not, just to be safe.
hahaha lol

This is Eric; I’m not a doctor. Condoms, used correctly every time, GREATLY reduce your risk of contracting HIV but do not GUARANTEE you won’t contract HIV. So your friend could have contracted HIV while having sex. Any person who has had sex is “sexually active.” Your friend should see a doctor and ask to be tested for HIV.

Good job for getting tested! To be clear, we didn’t scare you; the facts did. This video just states the facts as determined by the CDC. It also notes that “If you have one or more of these symptoms, does it necessarily mean you are infected with HIV or have developed AIDS? No. Many common diseases can cause one or more of these symptoms …. So dont panic. But … see a doctor and ask to be tested for HIV.”

This is Eric; I’m not a doctor. If you’ve had sex with a person who is HIV positive, you may have contracted HIV. See a doctor, explain your whole situation (including both the wife and HIV+ boyfriend) and get tested immediately. Ask if you can take a PCR test, which will answer your status sooner. Until you have been confirmed to be HIV- for 100% certain, each time you have sex with your wife you may be placing her at risk. She has a right to know that. You need to tell her. I know that’s hard.

This is Eric; I’m not a doctor. Don’t spend time worrying. Just see a doctor, describe your symptoms, follow their instructions, and get tested for HIV while you’re at it. A swollen lymph node can be a symptom of MANY things (most of which are generally low-risk and will go away with time, like a viral infection) but only a doctor can diagnose your personal situation. If a lymph node remains swollen over time you should DEFINITELY see a doctor and ask about it to be safe.

This is Eric; I’m not an attorney. A charge of manslaughter requires a death. If a person KNOWS they are HIV positive and has sex with a partner without informing them and the partner contracts HIV, the partner *may* have a cause for legal action (criminal prosecution and/or civil suit) in some jurisdictions. See our video “Disclosure: Would You Rather Risk a Rejection or a Prosecution” for details. Try to learn definitively, verifiably if he’s HIV+ or HIV- & get tested yourself.

@ Bigthingzpoppn08: Seriously, see a doctor about your symptoms and get tested for HIV. Watch our vids “Is HIV a Death Sentence?” and “The Top Ten Reasons to Take an HIV Test” to learn why. Either you are HIV+ or you are not. Knowledge empowers you to do the right thing either way. Also, the symptoms might be due to another condition besides HIV that you might benefit from treating sooner rather than later. Get tested! Take control!
I have just checked this website and I have found it to be very useful and informative. The information that you have given here is very and it must be benefiting the visitors of your website. You have given here a very simple and precise explaination of the early symptoms of HIV which is easily understandable even to a layman. I really appreciate this.
