Parkinson’s disease is characterized by degeneration of central nervous tissues, affecting the motor skills of a person, thereby impairing his/her movements and speech.
In Ayurveda, Kampa Vata is similar to Parkinson’s disease. Kampa means vibration or shaking. Ayurvedic texts describe the symptoms as constant shaking or tremor of limbs and/or head, difficulty in body movements, difficulty in speaking, expressionless face and staring like look.
In ayurveda the disease is a cause of imbalance in one of the three doshas Kapha, Pitta, and Vatta. It states that Parkinson’s disease is due to the disturbed vata element in the body. Vata governs breathing, blinking of the eyelids, movements in the muscles and tissues, pulsations in the heart, all expansion and contraction, the movement of the single impulses in nerve cells. Vata also governs feelings and emotions such as freshness, nervousness, fear, anxiety, pain, tremors and spasms.

Zandopa is an herbal remedy for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease from Zandu pharmaceuticals, India. It is a water soluble powder sourced from a plant called ‘Mucuna pruriens’ which contains a natural source of Levadopa.
Mucuna pruriens is one of the popular Ayurvedic herbs, also known as velvet bean or cowhage. This herb contains L-Dopa, a precursor to the neurotransmitter dopamine.
Zandopa is a standardized, safe, effective & economical natural source of levadopa and can effectively replace Synthetic L-dopa formulations in patients who comply with its dosage regimen. It does not have any side effects of a regular synthetic L Dopa and can also improve the overall functions of the body.

Synthetic L Dopa can have following side effects:

  • Hypotension, especially if the dosage is too high.
  • Arrhythmias, although these are uncommon.
  • Nausea, which is often helped by taking the drug with food, although protein interferes with drug absorption.
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding.
  • Disturbed respiration. This is not always harmful, and can actually benefit patients with upper airway obstruction.
  • Hair loss.
  • Confusion.
  • Extreme emotional states, particularly anxiety, but also excessive libido.
  • Vivid dreams and/or fragmented sleep.
  • Visual and possibly auditory hallucinations.
  • Effects on learning. There is some evidence that it improves working memory, while impairing other complex functions.
  • Sleepiness and sleep attacks.
  • A condition similar to amphetamine psychosis.

Levodopa causes lesser psychiatric side effects than other drugs which are used for Parkinson’s disease, including anticholinergics, selegiline, amantadine, and dopamine agonists. Because psychiatric side effects often occur at night, and if they are severe some doctors recommend reducing or stopping the evening dose.

Various advantages of having Zandopa over other synthetic doses are:

  • Improved sleep.
  • It reduces body fat & decreases cellulite.
  • Decreases wrinkles.
  • Improves skin texture & appearance.
  • Increases bone health and reverses osteoporosis.
  • Increases lean muscle mass.
  • Improves mood and sense of well-being.
  • Enhances libido & sexual performance.
  • Increases energy levels.
  • Improves cholesterol profile & regeneration of organs (heart, kidney, liver, lungs).
  • Dramatically improves immune system

Ayurvedic Parkinson’s treatment utilizes a holistic approach with zandopa and it aims at balancing vata element. It not only uses the medicine but also massage therapy, and enema are used.
Thus the holistic approach of zandopa not only lays stress towards balancing the body, identify the root cause and then cure it but it also has several benefits over synthetic L-Dopa as stated above.
